50 Years Behind the Mic

The Phillies will honor Dan Baker tonight and celebrate his 50 years as public address announcer for the team. Baker and Harry Kalas are the two voices that are synonymous with Phillies baseball for me. They are the soundtracks of summer.

Anyway, a few years ago I was able to attend media day for Home Runs for the Heart at Citizens Bank Park. It's a fundraiser for the American Heart Association where folks can pay to take batting practice. My boss at the time used to work for the Heart Association, and she got me in. Thanks, Beth!

As I waited my turn to hit, or attempt to hit, Dan approached me and asked how I'd like to be introduced. He was introducing all the hitters as if we were getting ready to step in for a real game. I shook his hand, gave him my information, and waited. 

When it was time, that familiar voice boomed out through the speakers to a sea of empty seats–now batting, from Temple University and Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Jeff Lyons!

Absolute goosebumps for me. I was grinning like an idiot when I stepped into the box. When I was done with my hacks (yes, I managed to get a few out of the infield), I searched out Dan and thanked him again for providing me with one of the greatest thrills of my life. I always wanted to be a major leaguer. For a moment, Dan Baker made me sound like one.
