Even More Help Wanted

Add bullpen coach to the list of vacancies in the Phillies help wanted section. Jim Gott was not offered a new contract for next year, which isn't really a surprise considering how historically bad the bullpen was in 2020.

That leaves the Phillies with the following positions to fill:

  • General manager
  • Pitching coach
  • Bullpen coach
  • Catcher (if they don't re-sign JT Realmuto, which they damn well better)
  • Centerfielder (they don't seem completely sold on Adam Haseley or Roman Quinn. Odubel Hererra? Ha. Fat chance.)

Acting GM Ned Rice will do the hiring, I guess, unless the team hires a new GM in the next few days. Now that the World Series is over, free agent negotiations and signings can begin early next week. It would be nice if the Phils had a new GM in place by then, but I don't see that happening.

Fever Dream

I haven't been blogging much lately, but that doesn't mean I'm not thinking about baseball. I've actually been dreaming about it.

The other night I had a dream that JT Realmuto signed a free-agent deal with the Diamondbacks. I have no reason to believe this will happen or why I dreamed about it, but I wanted to blog about it just in case.

Free agency starts five days after the end of the World Series. It's going to be a wild winter. (Photo via The Athletic and Getty Images)

Phils Pitching Coach Retires

Everybody knows the Phillies bullpen was a dumpster fire on steroids this past season. It was so bad, pitching coach Bryan Price just announced his retirement. For real.

Price turned nobodies into Cy Young winners. But I guess the guys in the Phillies pen were worse than nobodies. Apparently, the decision was for personal reasons. But I have feeling the flaming pile of garbage he had to work with had a lot to do with it.

So now, the Phillies need a GM, a pitching coach, a brand new bullpen, and a new contract for that Realmuto guy. It's gonna be an interesting winter.

GM Help Wanted

Now that Phillies general manager Matt Klentak has "agreed to step aside," the team finds itself in need of a general manager.

Jim Salisbury of NBCSports Philadelphia came up with a list of 14 possible candidates for the job. There are some interesting names on his list. I like his thinking of raiding the front offices of teams like the Astros, Braves, Dodgers, Rays, Padres, and Yankees, because those organizations have fantastic minor league systems and a seemingly endless supply of players ready to make an impact at the major league level.

Who don't we want? Old school retreads. We don't need any dinosaurs who completely dismiss analytics—guys like Ruben Amaro Jr., Dave Dombrowski, or Dan Duquette. This team needs someone who has actually contributed to building a team within the last few years.

Or they could go for a really out-of-the box candidate, someone who knows the organization inside and out. Someone like Chase Utley, who spent some time in the Dodgers front office after he was done playing. It has next to zero chance of happening, but it's kind of fun to think about. But, like I said above, please no old-school retreads. They should absolutely let manager Joe Girardi be part of the hiring process.

Playoff Debut, ex-Phillie Edition

Remember Sixto Sanchez? The can't-miss top-of-the-rotation pitching prospect the Phillies traded to the Marlins for JT Realmuto?

He's starting a playoff game tomorrow. For the Marlins. Aaron Nola has never made it to the playoffs. #BadThingsHappenInPhiladelphia.

Unapologetically Awful

Welp, there it is. The Phillies new City Connect uniform. It's awful. An assault to the eyes. And barely a connection to the city. Sur...
